Will & Ade’s Story – Sparks Attendees
17/2/2025
Will and his support worker, Ade, have been attending Sparks at Door 84 for over two years, finding a space where Will feels truly included. Profoundly deaf, Will has faced challenges in other groups, but at Sparks, he feels welcome and confident.
“Will feels he is included, this does not happen at every group we have attended. We are both made to feel so welcome, and this gives Will confidence to get involved, leave my side, and show off his personality.”
From arts and crafts to trips and parties, there’s always something happening, but Will’s favourite is the pool table. The structured, friendly environment helps him build friendships and enjoy the routine he thrives on.
“Routine is very important to Will, and this group gives him this. Seeing familiar faces each week makes a big difference.”
Ade benefits, too, connecting with other caregivers and sharing experiences. “The social side helps me too. I can chat with other caregivers about life in general and share information about other groups in the city.”
Although not everyone knows British Sign Language, staff and regular attendees have found ways to communicate, making Will feel valued. “They have learnt to communicate with each other in different ways, which is such a positive outcome” commented Ade.
Will also gets to celebrate his achievements, which boosts his confidence. “He loves stepping up in front of everyone to show off his certificates and medals – it makes him feel special and accepted.”
“You are very lucky to have so many nice people who attend,” Ade sums up.
Sparks is more than just a session – it’s a place where people like Will and Ade can connect, feel included, and truly be themselves.
