Laura’s Story – Sparks Attendee

10/3/2025

Finding Joy and Friendship at Door 84

Laura has been attending Sparks sessions since 2018, and for her, it’s the highlight of the week. She loves to dance and sees it as a fun way to exercise.

“I come each week to have fun—dancing is exercise, and I don’t exercise any other time!”

Prior to attending Door 84, she had attended another disco group, but found Door 84’s environment to be significantly more welcoming and engaging.

“People are more friendly here, and we can chat in the café after.”

Laura has formed new friendships through Sparks while also attending with lifelong friends, making the experience even more special. One of her favourite parts of the disco is choosing songs for the DJ. She spends all week thinking about the perfect tunes and always picks ones that get everyone on the dance floor.

“It makes me feel happy coming here. It’s good to have a laugh with my friends.”

With limited group activities in York that interest her, Laura values the inclusive space that Door 84 provides. Alongside her carer and friends, she enjoys the chance to connect, have fun, and share her love of music with others

Door 84’s Sparks session has become a valuable part of Laura’s life, providing her with physical activity, social connection, and emotional well-being.
