Wayne’s Story – Supported Volunteer

6/3/2025

How Door 84 Helped Wayne Find a Happy Home Again

Wayne, a valued volunteer at our community café, was experiencing significant stress due to ongoing issues with noisy neighbours at his first-floor flat. The situation became so stressful that it started to take a toll on both his mental health and his relationship.

“I would come to volunteer at the café feeling exhausted and stressed, but I did whatever I could to stay away from my flat—it was unbearable,” Wayne shared.

Meanwhile, a regular attendee of our café, who is profoundly deaf, was struggling with the accessibility of her second-floor flat. Recognising the opportunity to assist both individuals, the Local Area Coordinator and the Door 84’s Community Manager helped arrange a property exchange between the two. It was a long process, but eventually, they were able to swap homes.

Door 84 supported the move by storing their belongings, helping with laundry, and providing essential food items to ease the financial strain of relocating. To give Wayne and his wife a much-needed break, we also arranged theatre tickets for a relaxing evening out.

Both individuals are now happily settled in their new homes, and Wayne’s overall well-being has notably improved. “We could never have moved without all your support,” said Wayne.

“We’re happy at last, and now that we’re finally settled, we sleep better than ever!” added his wife, Rachel.

Door 84 provided vital support to Wayne and Rachel, helping them through their move and ensuring they could finally settle into a safe and comfortable home.
