Lacie & Ruby’s Story
4/8/2025
Lacie and Ruby, both 16, have found something truly special at Door 84 – a place to grow, give back, and just be themselves.
They both attend youth sessions once a week as regular young people, enjoying everything Door 84 has to offer – but they also go the extra mile by being young volunteers. They’re part of the team that helps make the sessions fun, safe, and welcoming for everyone.
It’s like growing up in a kind of family.
Lacie started attending Door 84 around five years ago and not long after, she told her friend Ruby about it, they’ve both been regulars ever since.
At first, they came just to join in the fun – enjoying the games, the relaxed space, and especially the brilliant trips. But it didn’t take long before they noticed something else: the young volunteers. “They had more responsibility, they were trusted to help out, and you could tell they really enjoyed it,” says Ruby. “We both knew we wanted to get involved like that.”
Now, as young volunteers themselves, they’re right at the heart of Door 84 and are thriving in their roles. They are embracing all the challenges such as helping new young people feel welcome and supported, working alongside staff, and offering brilliant ideas and input for new activities and trips.
A space to feel supported and be yourself
Lacie and Ruby love the fact that no two sessions are ever the same. As both attendees and volunteers, they get to mix with different age groups, try out new things, and play a role in shaping what happens.
But more than that, it’s the atmosphere that keeps them coming back. “You get to know each other so well – it’s like growing up in a kind of family,” they say. “You feel supported, and most importantly, you can be yourself.”
Both girls feel that Door 84 offers something that school doesn’t – a chance to relax, be listened to, and look after your wellbeing. “At school, you don’t really get the chance to talk or be mindful of how you’re feeling,” says Lacie. “Here, you can chat with staff and volunteers about anything.”
“It’s definitely helped our mental health,” adds Ruby. “Instead of being stuck at home on our phones, we’re here socialising, being active, and doing something positive.”
Their message to other young people is clear: “If you’re bored, come down to Door 84!” They know that for many teens, it’s easy to feel stuck at home doing nothing – but Door 84 offers something better: a place to make friends, go on fun days out, try new activities, and be part of a team.
Why Door 84 matters
Lacie and Ruby’s journey from young attendees to young volunteers shows just how much of an impact Door 84 can have. It’s a place where you can grow, be valued, and find your voice – whether you’re coming along to join in or stepping up to help out.
