A Cracking Good Time at Our Easter Community Event!

Wow – what an egg-cellent day we had at our Family Easter Event!

We were thrilled to welcome around 150 members of the community, including some very special guests from York’s civic party – the Lord Mayor and the High Sheriff.

The Easter crafts were a big hit – our craft tables were buzzing with creativity, and we saw some truly fantastic pieces being made. We love how much imagination you all brought to the day!

We were also delighted to welcome back Roger Dixon, who was a long-standing Trustee and recently retired from his position. Roger was absolutely thrilled to see the charity in full swing and was presented with two brilliant picture boards showcasing Door 84 activities, created by our amazing young people. A really special moment for all of us!

Thanks to the gorgeous sunshine, our backyard came alive with fun – families soaked up the rays, while children and young people got stuck into sports, games, and some seriously splashy water balloon fun.

And of course, our ever-popular raffle helped raise money for Door 84 – a huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes and bought tickets. Your support is fantastic!

We had such a joyful, sunshine-filled day connecting with our local community. If you missed out this time, don’t worry – we’ve got more community events planned for the coming year!

Keep an eye on our socials for updates – we’d love to see you at the next one!

Footsteps For Food – Update

Footsteps for Food: My Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for Door 84!

Only 9 days to go until the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge, and I am amazed by how generous people have been in sponsoring me to provide much-needed funds for Door 84.

We’re over 90% of the way to our target of £3500 and if we can exceed it, that will be fantastic!

Am I ready for the challenge?

Well I’ve been going to the gym as usual, trying to increase the strength in my legs and have managed a few long walks. I’m not sure 15km with a few short steep bits is really sufficient preparation for 40km with 3 big hills….What can you do when you live in one of the flatter parts of the UK! However, I’ve been out to Bishop Wilton, Yearsley Forest and up to Sutton Bank in the last few weeks, so hopefully that will have had some positive impact.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated – it is much appreciated.

If anyone hasn’t got around to sponsoring me yet and is able to do so, please give what you can here. Anything donated will be matched by the Aviva Community Fund, effectively doubling the value of your money. Every penny really does count!

Wish me luck, and I’ll let you all know how it goes on 26th April – I just hope it’s not raining all the way around!”

Footsteps For Food

Footsteps for Food: My Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for Door 84!

Hi everyone, Sue here! I’m incredibly excited (and maybe a little nervous!) to announce my upcoming fundraising challenge as part of our Footsteps for Food campaign. I’ll be tackling the legendary Yorkshire Three Peaks on 26th April 2025, to raise vital funds for Door 84’s incredible Community Café.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a gruelling 24-mile round trip, with a staggering 1585 meters of ascent. That’s climbing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, all within 12 hours. Let’s just say, it’s going to be a real test! I did this challenge over 30 years ago, and my memory of it is a little “hazy” and my body is definitely a lot more “creaky” than it was back then!

Why am I doing this?

Because Door 84 is a truly special place. The team here are so dedicated and passionate about supporting our local community. They go above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome and provide help wherever it’s needed. The Community Café is a lifeline for many, offering free or discounted food, a warm space to socialise, and access to crucial support from professionals like the City of York Council and our local Ward Councillors.

What will your donations achieve?

The goal of our Footsteps for Food campaign is to raise £3,500. This amount will allow us to purchase a full 12 months worth of essential produce for the Community Café. That’s a whole year of providing food, friendship, and support to those who need it most.

Food is so much more than just sustenance. It’s a way to bring people together, build connections, and combat social isolation. It offers relief to individuals and families facing hardship, and creates a sense of belonging.

How can you help?

There are two ways you can help:

1) Please, if you can, donate to the Footsteps for Food campaign. Every single donation, big or small, will make a real difference. Your generosity will help us keep the Community Café running. My Footsteps for Food Crowd Funder page

2) If you’d like to take part in the York 10K to raise funds for Door 84’s Footsteps for Food campaign, please get in touch by emailing us at fundraising@door84.org.uk.

Places cost £15 (normally £29.50 per runner) and you will get a Door 84 sports- T-shirt to run in and then keep.

What we ask in return is that you raise a minimum of £100 for the Footsteps for Food campaign.

Thank you for your support. I’ll be keeping you updated on my training progress and the lead-up to the big day.
