Sophie’s Story – Café Attendee

19/2/2025

Sophie, a single parent, has been attending Door 84’s Community Café for over two years, finding support, friendship, and confidence along the way.

Last year, she turned to the café for help with severe damp in her home, which was affecting her health and her two-year-old child. The Community Manager took immediate action, arranging meetings with housing officials and local councillors, while Door 84 provided practical support, including washing her laundry to reduce further damp.

With secured funding, Door 84 also provided new bedding, towels, and paint to refresh her home once the issue was resolved. Weekly surplus food helped ease food and fuel poverty, and at Christmas, her child received free Santa tickets and donated toys, bringing joy despite their struggles.

“You guys helped me and my daughter so much. I forgot that people could be so kind.”

Inspired by the support she received, Sophie now volunteers at the café, and has accepted a position as a Trustee. Having a voice is very important to her, and being part of Door 84 enables her to give back to others whilst building her confidence and skills.

“Volunteering here makes me feel included. I know I’m doing my best for others, just like Door 84 did for me!”

Sophie’s journey is a testament to the power of community. Door 84 remains a welcoming space where people find help, hope, and the opportunity to thrive.
