Phil’s Story – Supported Volunteer

26/2/2025

Phil first connected with Door 84 in 2015 after his speech therapist recognised that he was feeling isolated and would benefit from social activities. He began attending Sparks, Door 84’s inclusive group for adults with disabilities and additional support needs. It quickly became clear that Phil was a great fit for a volunteer role, and he soon became a valued supported volunteer.

After losing both his job and his mum—whom he had cared for—Phil felt incredibly lonely. “I felt lost, I didn’t see anyone anymore. I’d known some of my work colleagues since school, and I didn’t want to go home to just be there alone.”

Sparks soon became a key part of Phil’s weekly routine. His volunteering role is varied, from welcoming group members and setting up activities to calling bingo and entertaining everyone with his singing. Over the years, he has also played a big role in fundraising events and recently joined the facilities team, ensuring the building is well-maintained for all its users. “I feel very proud of my work here. I want to help people, and that is what makes me happy—I’m here for them!”

Phil describes Door 84 as more than just a place to volunteer—it’s become like family. “Being part of Door 84 fills me with happiness. I’ve got to know and trust people, we look out for each other, and I have a good laugh.”

Through his volunteering, Phil has taken part in training courses, trips, and new activities that have pushed him outside his comfort zone. His social circle has grown, and he now attends parties and other social events with friends he’s met through Sparks.

One of the most special opportunities Phil has had at Door 84 is performing in front of others. Whether at community events or within sessions, he’s been able to share his love of singing with an audience. “I feel like I’m giving back when I volunteer. I enjoy singing Elvis and entertaining people.”
